Medicare Part D is the part of medicare that covers prescription drugs.  Prescription drug coverage for medicare beneficiaries can be provided by group retiree plans, veteran's benefits (VA), or by enrolling in a Medicare Part D plan offered by a private insurance company offered in your area.  "Stand-alone" Prescription drug plans (PDP) are available to Medicare beneficiaries and will help subsidize the cost of prescription drugs covered by Medicare Part D.  Some Medicare beneficiaries will choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage, however some Medicare Advantage plans do not include prescription drug coverage and Medicare Supplement plans (post 2006) never cover prescriptions drugs.  In these instances, a "stand-alone" prescription drug plan (PDP), may be your best option.
